A beautiful historic streetscape made of Tosa plaster in Muroto, Kochi Prefecture. The unique architecture with white walls and water-cut tiles will make you feel like you've traveled back in time.
Kirakawa Townscape is a historic streetscape located in Kirakawa-cho, Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture, and designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government. From the Meiji to early Showa periods, Kirakawa prospered through forestry, charcoal burning, and whaling, and is lined with quaint houses that tell the story of its prosperity. There are not many, but the pure white Tosa plaster walls and unique roof tiles called mizukirikawara (water-cutting tiles) that were designed to protect buildings from heavy rain and wind are a feature of the area.
The center of the area is around the Kirakawa Townscape Museum, where Kotohira Shrine is located. Old buildings are scattered here and there.
There are also a few other shops in the area, such as the town's bakery "Home Bakery Tokuya," the izakaya "Kirakawa Uodokoro Gen," and the yakiniku restaurant "Kaisen Yakiniku Yamaju."
There are two parking lots, but the second parking lot is on the north side and a little far away.
