Motoya Valley overlooks the north face of Mt. Oyama. Reached from the inner shrine of Ogamiyama Shrine via a forest path, this hiking and photography spot offers a spectacular view of the folding screen-like cliffs and starry sky.
Motodani is a vast riverbed-like valley formed by the accumulation of sediment that collapsed from Mt. Daisen's north face. Its dynamic landscape, created by the towering rock faces of the Obyobu Rock and Kobyobu Rock, is captivating, while a subalpine natural forest stretches out beneath. Located in a corner of Daisen-Oki National Park, this outdoor observation deck offers a chance to experience the beauty of nature.

The approach begins at Daisen-ji Temple and continues through the Okumiya Shrine of Ogamiyama Shrine, famous for Japan's longest natural stone approach. From there, it's a 30-minute stroll to Motodani. The walk from Bakuroza Parking Lot takes approximately one hour. The valley features viewpoints such as the Motodani refuge hut and the area around the dam, offering up-close views of the north face. If you're planning a circular trip, you can also take the Shingyoja Course, which joins the summer mountain trail.

The recommended season is winter, when the fresh greenery and autumn foliage are in full bloom and the air is crisp. On clear nights, the Milky Way can be seen over the north face, making it a famous spot for stargazing photography. However, the north face is at high risk of avalanches, falling rocks, and sudden weather changes, so caution is required, especially in winter. It's best to avoid overexerting yourself and stay in the daytime, dress warm and windproof, and decide whether to turn back depending on the situation.
