Daisen is one of Japan's four famous mountains in Chugoku highest peak located 1,729m.
One of the great attractions of Mt. Daisen is that the view changes completely from each direction, so it's enjoyable not only to climb it but also to simply view it from various vantage points.

There are two common hiking trails: the "Summer Climbing Trail" and the "Utopia Trail," with the "Summer Climbing Trail" being more suitable for beginners.

The "Summer Climbing Trail" takes approximately 6 hours round trip (3 hours ascent, 2.5 hours descent). It's all uphill from the 1st to 8th stations. However, from the 8th station onwards, there's a well-maintained boardwalk and the climb is gentler, making it a pleasant, picnic-like experience.

There is also a "Gyoja Trail" that runs partway up the trail, but the "Summer Climbing Trail" is better maintained and easier to walk.

If you choose the "Gyoja Trail," we recommend taking it on the way down. Highlights include a beautiful view of the "North Face of Mt. Daisen" from the base of the mountain, and the opportunity to visit the Okumiya Shrine of Ogamiyama Shrine and Daisen-ji Temple.

Climbing Mt. Daisen can be dangerous depending on the season and weather, so it's best to check the official website below before planning your climb.

The "Mt. Daisen Summit Refuge Hut" has a simple shop (selling instant ramen, etc.) and a restroom (a conservation contribution of 500 yen is required). The "Summer Mountain Trail 6th Station Refuge Hut" does not have a restroom, but it does have a private room for relief. You must place your waste in a plastic bag (for a fee) and take it home with you.

Parking is available at Nankogawara Parking Lot (across the river from the Montbell Daisen Store) and several prefectural parking lots. Parking is free outside of the winter ski season.

[Trivia]
The Four Famous Mountains of Japan are Mt. Fuji, Mt. Tateyama, Mt. Ontake, and Mt. Daisen.

[Useful Concerns]
- The traverse trail leading to Mt. Daisen's highest peak, Kengamine, has been subject to frequent landslides due to past earthquakes, making it extremely dangerous to climb. For this reason, climbers generally aim for Mt. Misen.
- Nankogawara Parking Lot, which is closest to the trailhead, fills up quickly in the early morning.
- It can be hot even at the summit in summer, but if the weather is bad it can be quite cold even with a light jacket.
[Parking fee]
Free (paid during ski season)
