Shurakuen, located in Yamakita, Tsuyama City, is a stroll-style garden with a pond built by Mori Nagatsugu between 1655 and 1658. Its elegant scenery, modeled after the Sento Imperial Palace, can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons.
Shurakuen is a daimyo garden with a pond and a strolling pond that was built by Mori Nagatsugu, the second lord of the Tsuyama domain, between 1655 and 1658, with the help of a garden designer from Kyoto. The pond occupies most of the long north-south site, and four large and small floating islands are placed on the pond. The northern part of the garden features the mountain range of the Chugoku Mountains as a backdrop. After 1670, it was taken over by the Matsudaira clan, and became a place to entertain guests as the lord's villa garden, "Gotaisho." It was named "Shurakuen" in 1870 (Meiji 3), and was designated a national place of scenic beauty in 2002.

No buildings from the past remain in the garden, and the current Yohokaku, Geihinkan, Seiryoken, and Fugetsuken were rebuilt after the Meiji period. The main highlight is the pond path, which changes appearance with the seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, water lilies in early summer, autumn leaves, and snow in winter. Especially in the autumn leaves season, the maple and ginkgo trees are reflected on the water's surface, making the scenery around the pond even more gorgeous.

Both admission and parking are free.
It is not as large as Okayama Korakuen, but if you have time, it is worth seeing Tsuyama Castle as well.

It is about 1km away from Tsuyama Castle, so it is better to go by car.
