The Shimane Museum of Art overlooks the sunset over Lake Shinji. With its water-themed collection, lakeside strolls, and the famous "Lake Shinji Rabbit" statue, this museum is a great place to enjoy sightseeing in Matsue and taking pictures of the spectacular scenery at the same time. The sunset over Lake Shinji from the museum has been selected as one of Japan's 100 best sunsets.
The impressive building, with its glass exterior stretching out onto the lakeshore, blurs the boundary between inside and outside, blending the exhibits into the landscape, creating a "museum in harmony with water." The permanent exhibition showcases paintings, prints, sculptures, photography, and crafts from Japan and abroad, all centered around water. Guests can enjoy the ever-changing colors of the sky and water from the lounge and terrace overlooking the lake. Outdoor sculptures are scattered along the lakeside, allowing visitors to experience both art and nature while strolling.

A highlight of the museum's exterior are the "Lake Shinji Rabbits," twelve bronze statues lined up on the shore, seemingly running toward the shore. Inspired by the legend of the white rabbit, they are a popular photo spot for praying for good fortune. The lakeside promenade is stroller-friendly, and in the evening, the golden water and the silhouetted sculptures create a picturesque scene. The museum's official website provides information on the daily sunset times, allowing visitors to enjoy the theater of sky and lake at their leisure.

The sunset spot in front of the museum is connected to the outside, so there's no need to enter the museum to watch it.

[Trivia]
- This museum, themed around harmony with water, was designed by Kiyonori Kikutake.
- The "Lake Shinji Rabbit" outside the museum is the work of sculptor Satoshi Yabuuchi. It is a popular lucky charm motif that alludes to the legend of the White Rabbit and Izumo Taisha Shrine, a place of matchmaking.
