Susa Shrine in Izumo enshrines the spirit of Susanoo, a famous deity from Japanese mythology. The sacred grounds are surrounded by a large 1,300-year-old cedar tree and clear streams, making it the perfect place to visit mythological, matchmaking, and power spots.
Located in the mountain village of Sadamachi, Izumo City, Susa Shrine is an ancient shrine dedicated to the spirit of Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Towering behind the main shrine is the "Great Susa Cedar," the temple's most sacred tree, measuring 7 meters in circumference and estimated to be approximately 1,300 years old. Its stunning appearance amid the tranquil forest is a sight to behold. Combined with the murmuring of the Sou River flowing alongside the approach to the shrine, the entire grounds are permeated with a solemn, purifying atmosphere.

The main shrine (a prefectural cultural property) and subsidiary shrines are scattered throughout the grounds, and the corridor-like pathways leading from the worship hall allow for a leisurely stroll. The shrine's history conveys the Susanoo faith of Izumo, the setting of the Kojiki.

The shrine is not flashy, but has a tranquil atmosphere. It is also popular as a power spot.

The mountain village viewed from upstream is also beautiful.

On the neighboring property across the river are the restaurants "Ajidokoro Susano" and "Susanookan."

Coming from the Izumo side, you'll find Tachikue Gorge along National Route 184.

Towards Okuizumo, you'll find Ryuzugataki Falls, one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls.

Also, it's about a 40-minute drive from Izumo Taisha via Prefectural Route 39.

[Trivia]
- Known as a "shrine for appeasing the spirit," it is sometimes introduced as the only shrine dedicated to the spirit of Susanoo. The sacred tree, the "Susa no Osugi," is a symbol of the prayers of worshippers.
