Preservation and repair work (temporary construction and demolition) of the former Taisha Station, an Important Cultural Property, is underway from February 1, 2021 (Reiwa 3) to December 20, 2025 (Reiwa 7).
The former JR Taisha Station, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, flourished as the gateway to Izumo Taisha Shrine. It is a masterpiece of a Japanese-style wooden station building, and a staple of Izumo tourism, touring retro architecture and railway heritage.
Opened in 1912 and renovated in 1924, the former JR Taisha Station is a renowned wooden, single-story station building with a purely Japanese design. Incorporating elements of temple and shrine architecture, such as ridge-end ornaments and kenyo (fishing ornaments), it exudes a dignified presence befitting the main entrance to Izumo Taisha Shrine. Of only three nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, this is the only Japanese-style station, adding to its rarity and appeal.
It is said that there was once a direct express train between Tokyo and Taisha.
Across the street from Taisha Station is the Izumo soba restaurant "Honke Okaji Handmade Soba."
[Trivia]
- The former JR Taisha Station is one of the "Important Cultural Properties" station buildings, along with Tokyo Station (Marunouchi) and Mojiko Station. It is the only one with a Japanese design.
- Modern architecture pioneer Chuta Ito is said to have been involved in the design, and the playful design of the roof tiles is evident.
