Kamosu Shrine is not flashy, but its main hall is a historic and stately shrine that has been designated a national treasure. There are only two shrines in Shimane Prefecture designated as national treasures: this one and the main hall of Izumo Taisha Shrine.
Located in Oba Village on the outskirts of Matsue City, Kamitama Shrine is an ancient shrine dedicated to Izanami-no-Mikoto. Climbing the moss-covered stone steps of the approach, the imposing main hall appears beyond the cedar grove. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1583 and is designated a National Treasure as the oldest surviving example of the "taisha-zukuri" style of architecture unique to the Izumo region. Its thick pillars, high floor, and ancient design are dignified and beautiful, allowing you to admire the shrine's exterior up close.

The interior of the main hall is said to be a "onna-zukuri" style, a counterpart to Izumo Taisha, and is a valuable example of the ancient taisha-zukuri style. The grounds are also dotted with the main halls of the Kibune Inari Shrines, both nationally designated Important Cultural Properties, and quiet worship continues as you circle the small forest. Because it is not overgrown with tourists, the soft morning light and the fresh air after a rain are particularly recommended.
It's not a tourist destination, but rather has a charming, unspoiled shrine atmosphere.

Also, nearby is the "Yakumo Tattsu Fudoki no Oka," a historic site from the Kofun period.

[Trivia]
- In contrast to Izumo Taisha's "male-style" construction, Kamudam Shrine's interior is said to be "female-style," a striking contrast.

[Useful Concerns]
- Goshuin stamps may not be available due to the absence of a shrine office. If you need one, consider alternative dates or seeking one from another company.
