Genbudo Cave Park is located close to Kinosaki Onsen. Tour the five caves with their hexagonal columnar joints and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the nationally designated natural monument and the San'in Coast Geopark.
Genbudo Cave Park, located on the right bank of the Maruyama River, features columnar joints formed by the cooling of lava approximately 1.6 million years ago. There are five caves: Genbu, Seiryu, Byakko, Minami-Suzaku, and Kita-Suzaku. From the shortest 15-minute two-cave tour to a 30-minute circular tour, visitors can enjoy the patterns on the rock face up close. The Japanese name for basalt comes from the local "Genbudo" cave. The hexagonal and honeycomb-like cross-sections of the rock face make for excellent photos.

Genbudo Cave is approximately 150 meters long, reaching up to 15 meters high and 10 meters wide. The cave features a tortoiseshell-shaped ceiling and five- to eight-sided stone pillars, captivating visitors with their mystical beauty.

At the Genbudo Museum at the foot of the mountain, visitors can experience exhibits and hands-on activities related to minerals, fossils, and Toyooka Kiryu crafts, as well as a dinosaur fossil zone. There's also a cafe where you can take a break.

It's only about a 10-minute drive from Kinosaki Onsen, so it's a spectacular spot worth stopping by if you're in the area.

[Trivia]
- Genbudo Cave is also of great academic value. In 1929, the rocks that led to Dr. Motonori Matsuyama's world-first publication of the "geomagnetic reversal" were discovered here.
- The caves are arranged in the following order: Genbu → Seiryu → Byakko → Minami-Suzaku → Kita-Suzaku. The shortest route is to visit both Genbu and Seiryu caves.

[Useful Tips]
- The park has many stone steps and unpaved areas, so some areas can be slippery. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
