"Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato" is a traditional village with thatched roofs. It retains the original Japanese scenery and has a nostalgic atmosphere.
Located deep in the mountains of Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture, near the source of the Yura River, "Miyama Kayabuki-no-Sato" is a beautiful village lined with thatched-roof houses, where the original Japanese landscape remains strong. It has been designated as a nationally important traditional buildings preservation district, and nearly 50 thatched-roof houses still stand in line, where people actually live. The thatched-roof houses look like paintings, and many tourists from both Japan and abroad visit as a "hidden spot of Kyoto" where every part is picturesque.

Walking around the village, you can feel the old-fashioned Japanese lifestyle and culture. On the way, you will find the Miyama Folk Museum (fee required), where you can see the inside of the thatched-roof houses and learn about the structure and history of thatched roofs. There are also souvenir shops and restaurants scattered around, and one of the pleasures is tasting gourmet food made with local specialties and looking for souvenirs unique to Miyama. Miyama milk and Miyama-grown buckwheat are particularly popular.

Miyama Kayabuki Village shows beautiful faces in every season. Each season has its own charm: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in fall, and snowy scenery in winter. Especially during the "Snow Lantern" period in winter, the fantastic scenery of snow-covered thatched roofs and soft lights spreads out, attracting many people.

[Trivia]
Miyama's thatched roofs are regularly re-thatched. This work is very large-scale and is carried out by local cooperatives, preserving traditional Japanese techniques and culture.
