Amanohashidate is one of Japan's three most scenic views, alongside Matsushima and Miyajima. It is a sandbar with a 3.6km long row of pine trees stretching across the sea, creating a spectacular view. From the observation decks on the north and south sides, you can enjoy the view of the dragon rising from between your legs, and you can also enjoy a tour around the area by sightseeing boat or cycling.
Amanohashidate is a national scenic spot, home to approximately 8,000 pine trees growing on the sandbar connecting Miyazu Bay and the Aso Sea. At Amanohashidate View Land, a mountain park on the south side, visitors can enjoy the popular "Hiryukan" viewing experience, where the sea and sky are inverted as you look through the trees, creating the illusion of a dragon ascending to the heavens. The park also boasts family-friendly attractions like the Hiryukan Corridor and a Ferris wheel, and is easily accessible by foot from the station.

The row of pine trees separating the two seas is a rare sight, and has been depicted in paintings and written about by many poets, including Yosano Hiroshi and Akiko, making it a beloved cultural landmark.

Take the cable car or lift to Kasamatsu Park on the north side for a refreshing view of the perfectly straight sandbar. It's close to Motoise Kago Shrine and Nariai-ji Temple, so combining your visit with a visit to these places allows you to enjoy both history and spectacular views. By using a sightseeing boat or rental bicycle that connects the north and south observation decks, you can travel one way over the water and the other through rows of pine trees, making the journey itself a highlight of the trip. It takes about 50 minutes to walk or 20 minutes by bicycle to cross the sandbar.

At Chion-ji Temple (Monju-do Hall) in front of the gate, try your luck with a puzzle lantern or a fan fortune-telling slip. If you have time, we recommend a scenic coastal train ride on the Tango Kuromatsu or Akamatsu, Kyoto by the Sea's signature sightseeing trains. The journey from Kyoto Station on the Hashidate Limited Express takes about two hours, making it the perfect itinerary for both day trips and overnight stays.
