Kikuya Yokocho is an alleyway filled with atmosphere, lined with white walls and earthen walls. Located in the heart of Hagi Castle Town, it is the perfect base for strolling around in a kimono, taking photos, and touring World Heritage sites. It is also home to the former residence of Takasugi Shinsaku, a central figure in the Meiji Restoration.
Kikuya Yokocho, which runs alongside the residence of the Kikuya family, purveyors to the Hagi domain, is a beautiful, straight path with white walls, a row of tenement gates, and a series of earthen walls. The underground power lines allow for a wide sky, highlighting the alley's depth. The road is just wide, and the white walls shine brightly in the soft light of morning and evening, or after rain, making it a popular spot for portraits and traditional Japanese photography. The surrounding area, known as "Hagi Castle Town," has well-preserved street layouts, allowing visitors to stroll around and get a sense of the scale of life at the time.

The Kikuya Residence is one of the oldest townhouses in Japan, representing the town of Hagi, and has been designated an Important Cultural Property. The grounds display not only the building but also gardens, art pieces, and crafts.

Extending your walk further to neighboring Iseya Yokocho and other townhouses, including the former Kubota Residence, will instantly highlight the contrast between the main street and back alleys. Sights related to the Meiji Restoration, such as the Hagi Museum and the former home of Kido Takayoshi, are also within walking distance.

There is also a wide selection of Hagi ware pottery in the shops along the street.

There are several parking lots, but the basic fee for a standard car is 310 yen. The nearest parking lots are the Hagi Museum Parking Lot and the Central Park Parking Lot. There are also free parking lots on the coast and castle side, but they are about a 15-minute walk away.
