This is the townscape from the mid-Edo period to the early Showa period, when it prospered as a castle town of Wakishiro and developed as a distribution center for indigo.
The "Udatsu Streets" in Mima City are located in Wakimachi, Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture, and are the center of Wakimachi, which prospered from the Edo period to the Meiji period through the production and trade of indigo. The most distinctive feature of this street is the "udatsu" fire walls between neighboring houses that rise to the roofs of each house. This is a symbol of wealth and is said to be the origin of the phrase "udatsu ga agaranai" (there is no way to stand on one side). Traditional houses with a beautiful contrast between white walls and black tiles stand side by side, conveying the prosperity of the past. Due to its historical value, the area has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the country.

The street is dotted with the "Wakimachi Theater Odeon-za," where you can get a glimpse of the life of indigo merchants at the time, the "Awa Natural Indigo Dyeing Yamauchi Udatsu Studio" where you can actually experience indigo dyeing (additional charge, reservation required), and rest areas. In particular, the Odeon-za is a wooden theater built in the early Showa period, and its retro atmosphere has been preserved. By stopping by these facilities, you can experience the history and culture of Wakimachi more deeply than just strolling through the town.

Even now in 2025, it is a popular spot visited by many tourists due to its unique scenery and historical charm. It is especially recommended for those who want to take a leisurely stroll through traditional Japanese towns and feel the breath of history.

The roadside station "Ai Land Udatsu" is adjacent.

If you are looking for a soba restaurant, we recommend "Sarasoba Rakuan".

[Useful points of concern]
The town is relatively compact, so if you are expecting a vast tourist spot, you may feel unsatisfied. You cannot enter each house, and the main focus is on appreciating the exterior. In summer, the sun is strong and walking through the town can be hot, so you need to take measures to prevent heatstroke. In addition, although there are restaurants and rest facilities, you may feel that the options are limited compared to the number of tourists.
[Admission Fee]
Walking around the town is free
Each facility has separate admission fees (e.g. Odeon Theatre 200 yen for adults)

[Opening Hours]
Each facility is generally open from 9:00 to 17:00

[Closed Days]
Each store and facility has its own closed days

[Parking]
There are several free parking lots around the town
