Saigozaki-ji Temple is the 24th temple of the 88 Shikoku temples. This sacred site stands at the tip of Cape Muroto, and is a scenic power spot with a view of the Pacific Ocean, the legend of Kukai's training, and the Cape Muroto Lighthouse and Mikuriya Cave.
Hotsumisakiji Temple is a renowned Shingon Buddhist temple said to have been founded on the sacred ground where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) practiced the Kokuzo Gumonji-ho ritual at Cape Muroto. Its principal image is Kokuzo Bosatsu (a hidden Buddha). The temple grounds are perched on a high point on a cape overlooked by rough waves, and the approach to the temple creates a solemn atmosphere enveloped in the sea breeze and forest scents. As the starting point for the Tosa temple pilgrimages, the temple strongly evokes the atmosphere of a training center.

Temple treasures include a wooden seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai and a standing statue of Gekko Bosatsu (National Important Cultural Property), and the temple's history, as told through historical documents, is also noteworthy. From the Muroto Cape Lighthouse beyond the Niomon Gate, visitors can enjoy the ocean view of Cape Muroto, making for a photogenic shot of the stone Buddha statues and Omukae Daishi statue in the temple grounds. For car visitors, the parking lot at the top of the Muroto Skyline is convenient. If you're walking or taking the bus, you can experience the traditional pilgrimage by climbing the "Penro Road" from the bus stop at the cape (a 20-minute walk).

[Trivia]
Saimizaki-ji Temple, also known as "Toji Temple" and the first temple in Tosa, is the 26th temple on the pilgrimage route, Kongocho-ji Temple (Sai-ji Temple).
