Mount Horaiji Horaiji is an ancient temple that stands on a sacred mountain towering over Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. Climb the 1,425 stone steps to see the Niomon Gate and main hall, both designated as important cultural properties by the country, and touch the hundreds-year-old umbrella cedar tree, and experience the fusion of faith and nature at this temple.
Mount Horaiji is a 695m high mountain with exposed rhyolite, a remnant of volcanic activity about 15 million years ago. It is said that Horaiji was founded by the hermit Rishu during the Taiho era (701-704), and has long been a sacred mountain for Yakushi faith and mountain asceticism. The approach to the temple is dotted with a giant tree called "Umbrella Cedar" that is over 800 years old, the Niomon Gate, a nationally designated important cultural property built by Tokugawa Iemitsu, and the main hall with beautiful carvings, creating a solemn atmosphere that combines history and nature, making it one of Aichi Prefecture's most powerful spots.

Mount Horaiji can be accessed by climbing the main approach with 1,425 stone steps, or by driving to the top of the mountain using the Horaijiyama Parkway. If you are confident in your physical strength, you can feel the breath of nature and the weight of history while climbing the stone steps. Near the summit, there is also the "Hōraisan Toshogu Shrine", which is associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, and by visiting both, you can get a deeper insight into history.

During the autumn foliage season, the entire mountain is dyed red and yellow, and it becomes crowded with many tourists.

The Hōraijiyama Parkway is currently free, but there is a fee for parking.

There are also many hidden tourist spots nearby, such as Yuya Onsen and Atera no Nanataki, one of the 100 best waterfalls in Japan.

[Useful points of concern]
The 1,425 stone steps of the main approach may be too much for those who are not confident in their physical strength. There is a route that takes you close to the summit by car, but it is a mountain road, so driving caution is required. During the autumn foliage season (November) and the New Year's visit period, it is very crowded, the parking lot may be full, and the temple grounds may become lively.
[Admission fee]
Free for the temple grounds (separate fee for Horaijiyama Natural Science Museum, separate fee for event participation)

[Opening hours]
Free entry

[Closed days]
Open all year round

[Parking fee]
