Kaikyokan Aquarium in Shimonoseki overlooks the Kanmon Straits. It is a popular aquarium for family trips and dates, with the world's largest pufferfish exhibit, a penguin village, and a dolphin and sea lion show. Renovations scheduled for 2025 will double its appeal.
Highlights of the aquarium include a large aquarium replicating the tidal currents of the Kanmon Straits and an exhibit featuring approximately 100 species of pufferfish. Observe the dynamic fish movements spurred by the currents and the diverse range of pufferfish unique to Shimonoseki up close. A major renovation was completed in August 2025, marking the opening of the new "Finfoot Beach" exhibit (a sea lion exhibit). The entrance, shop, and coral reef tank have also been renovated, further enhancing the educational and entertainment value of the aquarium.

The popular "Penguin Village" is one of the largest in Japan, showcasing five species of penguins in the subantarctic and temperate zones. Visitors can enjoy watching them "swim as if flying" through an underwater tunnel. The outdoor Dolphin Stadium offers a dynamic 20-minute presentation featuring both dolphins and sea lions. It's a fascinating way to learn about marine life, including the "bubble rings" made by finless porpoises.

The aquarium is located in the "Aruka Port" area, adjacent to Karato Market and Kamon Wharf. You can create a half-day to full-day trip by combining a stroll along the seaside, the Ferris wheel, and the Kaikyo Dream Tower. We recommend checking the event schedule and floor map on the official website in advance to efficiently visit the shows and experiences you want to see.
