Located in Tsuwano Town, Shimane Prefecture, this is the former residence and magnificent garden of the Hori family, the chief retainer of the Tsuwano domain. You can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the harmony between history and nature.
The "Kyuhorisi Garden" is the former residence of the Hori family, who served as the chief retainer of the Tsuwano Domain during the Edo Period, and its vast garden. It has also been designated as a national scenic spot, and is known as a hidden gem, quietly nestled in the historic townscape of Tsuwano. The pond-style garden, which is integrated with the residence, was created by skillfully utilizing the slope of the mountain, and the scenery created by the trees that show different expressions throughout the seasons, the quaint pond, and the stones arranged there give a sense of traditional Japanese aesthetic sense.
The garden is composed of four parts: the main garden, the Rakuzanso Garden, the Warakuen Garden, and the Hatasako Hospital Exterior Garden, and incorporates the rich nature of the mountain behind as a borrowed landscape, making you amazed at its large scale. The main garden is a pond-style garden with rock arrangements and trees arranged around the pond.
In spring, the fresh green leaves are a vivid sight, and in autumn, the autumn leaves are particularly beautiful, and the entire garden is dyed in a brocade color. While strolling through the garden, you can think back to the way of life in the former samurai residences and the taste that was put into the garden.

The parking lot has a limited number of spaces, so it may be full, especially during the autumn foliage season and on weekends. It is about a 20-minute walk from Tsuwano Station to get there by public transportation, so it is a good idea to visit with plenty of time or consider taking a taxi.
