Uchiko-cho prospered from the production of Japanese wax from the late Edo period to the Meiji period. The main features are the pale yellow clay walls and the scenery of the alleys ("sedawa") between the buildings.

A 15-minute walk from the Uchiko Town Hall Yokaichi Gokoku Townscape Preservation Center to the Uchikoza Theater is lined with shops from the museum.

Japanese candles are still made using traditional methods in Uchiko, a town that prospered in the production of Japanese wax from the late Edo period to the Meiji period.
