The museum is divided into five permanent zones: "Nature Around Us," "The History of the Earth and Life," "Evolution of Life," "The Blessings of Nature," and "The Lives of Living Creatures." Three whale skeletons (nicknamed Nagasuke and others) greet visitors overhead at the entrance porch, and the life-size model of a Naumann's elephant and dinosaur skeletons are popular. There are also many touchable fossils and video exhibits, so children will never get bored.

The museum also features exhibits tracing Osaka's history, as well as fossils and ruins excavated in the city.

Osaka Municipal Nagai Botanical Garden is located on the same premises.
