This red brick building from the Taisho period is an important cultural property. It also has a "free photo museum" with a striking central staircase and stained glass windows. It is a cosplay-approved facility and a popular cultural spot for location shoots.
The Nagoya City Municipal Archives is a sightseeing spot where you can fully appreciate the magnificent architecture of the former Nagoya Court of Appeals. From the central stairwell with its stained-glass skylights, stone-clad corridors, and former detention center, every aspect of the space is captivating. Symmetrical compositions and low-angle shots are easy to achieve, making it a perfect companion for a photo stroll through the streets of Shirakabe, Chikaramachi, and Kuregimachi.

This museum is an officially recognized "Cosplay Host Town" by Nagoya City. Personal cosplay photography is permitted as long as the museum's rules are followed. Starting in 2025, advance application will be required for weekday photography (applications will remain required on weekends and holidays, as before). Detailed rules apply, including days when the central staircase cannot be used, strict photography rules, no photography in the restored third-floor conference room, and a ban on glitter costumes (effective January 4, 2025), so be sure to check the official "Photography Application" page before visiting. The outdoor area is considered a city park, and professional photography requires a separate permit (not required for individuals).

[Trivia]
Photographers and cosplayers will appreciate the soft natural light in the morning, the afternoon to take advantage of the reflections near the stained glass, and the exterior, where the brickwork looks sharp even on cloudy days. Lightweight equipment is essential, and using a single light source is safe so as not to obstruct pedestrians. If you're wearing a costume with a long train, safety is a top priority, such as not standing on the edge of stairs.

[Helpful Concerns]
Parking is often full due to heavy usage on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, so it's recommended to use public transportation or nearby paid parking lots.
