Tenryu-ji Temple is the head temple of the Tenryu-ji sect of the Rinzai sect, founded in 1345 by Takauji Ashikaga.
As a Zen temple, there is a formality that boasts the first place of Kyoto Gozan. It is also registered as a World Heritage Site as "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto".
