Details
Shirogane Blue Pond is a scenic spot located in Biei, Kamikawa District, Hokkaido, characterized by its mysterious blue water surface as its name suggests. It is said that this unique blue color is created when groundwater containing aluminum flows into the dam built to prevent volcanic mudslides on Mt. Tokachi, which reflects certain wavelengths of sunlight. The fantastic scenery created by the contrast between the dead larch trees standing in the pond and the blue water surface is like a painting. Due to its beauty, it has become world famous for being used as a desktop background for Macs.

The charm of the Blue Pond is that its appearance changes greatly depending on the time of day, weather, and season. During the day on a sunny day, it shines in a vivid cobalt blue, and you can enjoy various blue colors depending on the angle you look at it from. At sunrise and sunset, the color of the sky is reflected on the water, creating a different, fantastical scene. In winter, the pond freezes over and snow piles up on top, transforming it into a silvery world with a beautiful contrast of white and blue. During the winter illumination period, you can also enjoy the fantastic view at night.

[Useful points of concern]
During winter, the blue water surface cannot be seen due to snow accumulation. Therefore, Biei Town's Blue Pond is lit up in winter, allowing you to see the mysterious blue snow scenery.
