Yakumoan is a quaint Japanese house built along the moat of Matsue Castle. It is a long-established soba restaurant where you can try Matsue's specialty "warigo soba". The cold soba is served in a three-tiered vermilion-lacquered round bowl, and is served with a variety of condiments and flavorful broth. It is a popular spot for tourists to enjoy traditional flavors while taking in the historical scenery of Matsue.
The biggest attraction of Yakumo-an is its **warigo soba**. It is a unique style of eating cold Izumo soba served in a vermilion-lacquered round bowl, with condiments (green onions, nori seaweed, grated momiji leaf, etc.) added, and then the broth is poured directly over it. The way of eating is said to be that of a connoisseur, who savors each layer and then drinks up the broth at the end. Yakumo-an's soba is characterized by its original soba aroma and chewy texture, which goes perfectly with the flavorful broth. To be honest, this unique way of eating is refreshing for first-timers and is sure to become a memorable part of your trip.

The restaurant is located along the Horikawa River of Matsue Castle, and from the window you can see the picturesque Horikawa River and the beautiful garden. The scenery enhances the food, especially on sunny days and in the season of fresh greenery and autumn leaves. The building is built on the former site of the samurai residence of Gennai Oishi, a swordsmanship instructor for the Matsue domain, and its quaint appearance is one of the attractions of Yakumo-an. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy your meal at your own pace.

Yakumoan is close to Matsue Castle and the Horikawa sightseeing boat dock, making it easy to include in your sightseeing route. It's a great place to stop by between strolls around Matsue Castle, or before or after boarding the Horikawa sightseeing boat. Why not add the flavor of this long-established restaurant, beloved by locals, to your travel memories?

[Trivia]

- Izumo soba is made using a method called "hikigurumi," in which the buckwheat kernels are ground with the husks still attached, giving it a dark color and a strong aroma.

- The name Yakumoan comes from Lafcadio Hearn, a literary figure with ties to Matsue.
