This is a reproduction of the remains of a gold mine that flourished since the Edo period. You can explore the mining tunnels and have the rare experience of touching the world's largest gold nugget, certified by Guinness. Gold panning is also a popular experience.
Toi Gold Mine is a historic gold mine that was the second largest producer of gold in Japan after Sado Gold Mine from the Edo period to the Meiji period. It is now a tourist facility, and visitors can explore the tunnels that faithfully reproduce the mining conditions of the time. Located on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula, it also offers a natural landscape.

Inside the tunnels, dolls that reproduce the mining conditions of the time are displayed in a realistic manner, and by walking through the dimly lit tunnels, visitors can experience the harsh working conditions and the history of gold mine development. The biggest attraction is the world's largest gold nugget, certified by Guinness, which is on display in the "Gold Museum." You can actually touch the huge nugget, which weighs 250 kg of pure gold and is worth several billion yen at present, and you will be overwhelmed by its weight and brilliance.

Other popular attractions include a museum where you can learn about the smelting process of mined gold and silver, and a "gold panning experience" where you can search for freshly mined gold dust. You can take home the gold dust you find, so it's a fascination for both children and adults. Combining history and experiences, this is a must-see spot for any visit to Izu.
