Tofuku-ji Temple was founded by Michiie Kujo, the regent of the time, during the Kamakura period. Kujo Michiie wanted to show off his power by building a gigantic Great Buddha, building a temple that was as imposing as Todaiji and Kofukuji, and enshrining it there. The name of the temple is taken from Todai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple to make it Tofukuji Temple, which shows the rivalry.
