Daisho-in is the head temple of the Shingon Omuro Sect and served as the betto-ji (temple responsible for managing a shrine) for Itsukushima Shrine.

Daisho-in has a long history that dates back to 806 AD when Kobo Daishi, also known as Kukai, founded the temple after undergoing ascetic practices on Mount Misen.
