Daitokuji is the head temple of the Daitokuji branch of the Rinzai sect.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi performed Oda Nobunaga's funeral and created Soken-in as a family temple.
The fairly large grounds contain a variety of buildings and gardens.

Daitokuji is a temple that has a deep connection with tea ceremony culture. Sen no Rikyu trained in the tea ceremony at Oubai-in, a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji Temple, and built a dry landscape tea room based on the garden of Daitoku-ji Temple. Rikyu Shichitetsu, disciples of Sen no Rikyu, also lived in the sub-temple of Daitokuji Temple and contributed to the spread of the tea ceremony.

The parking lot is on the east side.

There is "Imamiya Shrine" near the northwest side, and "Kinkakuji" on the west side.
