The Karamon gate of Hogonji Temple, located on Chikubu Island on the north side of Lake Biwa, is designated as a national treasure.
Chikubu Island is a small island floating in the center of Lake Biwa, and has been known since ancient times as a sacred place for the worship of Benzaiten. Hogonji Temple is said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki in 724 at the request of Emperor Shomu.

The Kannon-do Hall and the corridor are designated as important cultural properties.

Boats depart from Nagahama Port, Hikone Port, and Imazu Port.
Boat fares are expensive, around 2,500 to 3,500 yen for a round trip.
