Zuiryuji Temple is a Soto Zen temple in Takaoka City whose Buddhist hall, lecture hall, and mountain gate are national treasures. Founded in 1614, it is one of the most famous temples in the Hokuriku region, where you can enjoy the history and architectural beauty of the temple.
Zuiryuji Temple is a Soto Zen temple located in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, built as the family temple of Lord Maeda Toshinaga, the lord of the Kaga domain. In 1645 (Shoho 2), early in the Edo period, Maeda Toshitsune built a full-scale temple complex to commemorate his father, Toshinaga. Its grand scale and well-balanced layout of the temple complex make it one of the most beautiful Zen temples in Japan, and its main gate, mountain gate, Buddha hall, and lecture hall are designated national treasures. It attracts many people as a "beautiful temple complex" that brings together the best of Japanese history and architectural technology.
The greatest attraction of this temple is the magnificent beauty of its seven halls (the main main gate, mountain gate, Buddha hall, and lecture hall), which are designated national treasures. The linearly arranged temple complex has a solemn atmosphere unique to Zen temples, but the intricate carvings applied to every detail and the vividly colored decorations will overwhelm anyone who sees them. In particular, the interior of the Buddha Hall has a high ceiling and an open space, and the sight of the Buddha statue enshrined there standing quietly is sure to bring you peace of mind.
The mountain gate is a three-story tower gate made entirely of keyaki wood, and is about 30m high and 16m wide. It is said to have been modeled after the Yueyang Tower in China.
The Buddha Hall is the main hall made entirely of keyaki wood, and is about 25m high and 14m wide. The Shaka Nyorai statue, the principal image of the temple, is said to have been made during the Kamakura period.
The lecture hall is an all-keyaki lecture hall, and is about 20m high and 12m wide. The ceiling is painted with "Flowers and Plants of the Four Seasons" by Kano Yasunobu.
